Here’s what happened at last year’s event:
Summer Thunder Cruise-In’s 2009 event:
Our July 25th Summer Thunder Cruise-In turned out to be bigger and better than ever! As our volunteers began preparations for the event, car enthusiasts began to enter the park, wanting to be the first to arrive. Over 800 participants cruised in to show their pride and joy as the day grew brighter and warmer by the hour! And warm is a bit of an understatement as temperatures rose to over 90° with a warm, seemingly tropical breeze all day long.
Proud car enthusiasts, owners of everything from hot rods to motorcycles to trucks to vintage beauties – rolled in with their prize possessions ready to share their stories and have a great time. Participants and spectators were entertained by the music of Animal's Planet who played classic rock and blues band style music all day long to the pleasure of the crowd.
WJFK 106.7 FM, The Fan, was Summer Thunder Cruise-In’s broadcast partner, featuring the Pit Crew of IN THE PITS- Racing Radio. The Pit Crew is part of WJFK’s “live line-up” and were the official emcees of the event. Larry O and Bob Steele have hosted the event for the last 6 years, while Hall of Fame drag racer, Johnny Rocca joined the fun once again this year bringing professional drag racing experience to our event! The entire broadcast crew came to help the cruise-in hit its target of raising as much money as possible to benefit The Petty Family’s - Victory Junction Gang Camp. In addition to Bob, Johnny and Larry, Sprint Cup reporter Kevin O’Rourke, Brian and Ryan Downey, M-Diddy and Indiana Dave Reininger interacted with those in attendance.
It was great – from beginning to end - Cruisers brought their pride and joy to Franklin Park, found a spot in one of the ball fields and began to enjoy each others’ stories, while envying paint jobs, chrome wheels and fancy fixings! There were several vendors this year – including a marketplace for the ladies and vendor row for the car aficionados Just as importantly, there were several food vendors serving up everything from hamburgers to BBQ to funnel cakes, ice cream and kettle corn!
Just as we were getting ready to raffle off the main prize, a 24 ft enclosed trailer, thunderous sounds came clapping through the park, starting a mass exodus of beautiful rides being returned to their stables. Bringing the evening to a close, the Pit Crew announced a close to the evening. But what better way to end to the sounds of thunder for the most successful Summer Thunder Cruise-In yet!
Our special thanks to everyone for your generous donations. The Victory Junction Gang Camp will be ever so grateful for your generosity! Be sure to check out all of the great photos of our event by clicking on “photos”!
Once again, we bring the largest car party in the United States to a close, but only until 2010! See you there!
